Maravilhoso | Wonderful

Eu tenho reclamado muito do frio mais do que nos meus primeiros dois anos (provavelmente por estar mais tempo em casa, de onde tenho trabalhado). Mas hoje peguei a estrada e fui à biblioteca da universidade como antigamente. Ainda cedo, quase nada vi pela escuridão. Mas a volta...ah! A volta!

I have been complaining of the cold weather much more often than in my first two years (probably because of spending more time home, where I have been working). But today I hit the road and went to the library of the university early in the morning like in the old times. I barely saw anything due to the darkness. But on the way back...Ah! The way back...

Peguei uma carona com meu professor de Tampere pra Lahti. Eram umas duas da tarde. Vocês tinham que ver. O céu azul pálido e um laranja rosado em tons pastéis perto do chão de onde o sol tímido brilhava. As árvores brancas e cinzas forravam o horizonte enquanto a fumaça imóvel saía das chaminés. Os campos e lagos se confundiam na brancura.

I got a ride with my professor from Tampere to Lahti. It was about two in the afternoon. You shouldve seen it. The pale blue sky with rosy orange pastel tones shining close to the ground from where the shy sun shone. The white and gray trees covered the horizon while the still smoke came out of chimneys. The fields and lakes were the same in their whiteness.



A preocupação com a greve da British Airways (que acabou de ser julgada ilegal), a incerteza sobre fundos para o doutorado, a ansiedade de ver a família depois de um ano e meio...tudo isso se perdeu no ar gélido que saía da minha boca enquanto eu suspirava em silêncio e sorrindo por estar ali, no meio da mais linda paisagem que eu já vi na vida.

The concern about the British Airways strike (which has just been overruled), the uncertainty about the funds for the doctorate, the anxiousness before seeing my family after one and a half years... all that was distilled in the cold air that came out of my mouth while I sighed in silence and smiled for being there, in the middle of the most beautiful landscape I have ever seen.


Pode ser gelado. Mas ninguém há de negar a beleza desse lugar.
I may be freezing, but no one can deny the beauty of this place.

Ficar dentro de casa o tempo todo é o pior aspecto do inverno.
É impressionante como eu me sinto melhor ao respirar um ar puro.
(E acredite, é muito bom respirar uma brisa de freezer).
Por isso, a melhor forma pra sobreviver neste inverno é encará-lo.
E uma coisa simples faz da sua batalha diária um prazer:

Staying inside your house all the time is the worst aspect of the winter.
It is impressive how I feel better when I breath pure air.
(And believe: it is delicious to breathe the freezer's breeze).

Carona do Papai Noel | Santa's Ride

Se a greve da British Airways confirmar (nosso vôo é dia 29), será que ainda dá tempo de eu mandar uma carta pro Joulupukki e pedir uma carona pro Brasil no seu serviço de entrega? Estava pensando em algo do tipo: "Po, bom velhinho, eu sou da terra! Praticamente de casa, po... Quebra essa aí, amigo". Se ele não quiser, eu engrosso. "Olha aqui, ou nos leva ou eu te denuncio por exploração de trabalho dos elfos!" Será que cola?

If they confirm the strike on British Airways (our flight is on the 29th), I wonder if it is still possible to send a letter to Joulupukki and ask for a ride to Brazil in its delivery service. I was thinking of saying something like: "C'mon, Santa! I am from the land, man... C'mon, amigo!" If he refuses, I will push it harder. "Look, either you take us or I will denounce you to the police for elf exploitation!" Will it work?

There are some weird people at the gym here in Lahti, you know?
One dries his butt with the hair dryer.
Another works out with a 2-liter gallon under the arm.
Another seems to be in a esquizofrenic carnival:
With the headphones, sometimes he dances in front of the mirror.
Oops! The last one is me... :)

Depressão de Inverno | Seasonal Depression

Tontura? Arrãm.
Problemas pra dormir? Arrãm.
Tristeza? hm...mais ou menos. Arrãm, vai.
Fome de doce e carboidratos? Arrãããm...
Drowsiness? Yep.
Sleeping troubles? Yep.
Sadness? Hm...more or less. Ok, yep.
Craving for carbohydrates and sweets? Yeeeep...

É isso que muitos sentem aqui nas férias do sol.
Se chama "depressão sazonal".
Pra se sentir melhor?
Luz, de acordo com os médicos.
Mas no meu caso, ar fresco e academia têm ajudado.

Para muitos, a língua finlandesa por si só é um trava-línguas.
Para provar o contrário, resolvi me desafiar.
Contarei até mil mais rápido do que rico ficar na cadeia no Brasil.

For many people the finnish language is in itself a tongue twister.
To prove contrarily, I will challenge myself.
